Chapter Eighteen

Eliot Burnside

I entered Caro’s familiar parlor to find the lady sitting at her customary desk. A beam of sunshine showed through the high window, turning her blond hair a burnished gold. She was truly beautiful, poised and assured. But deep waters ran under the surface, ones I wasn’t sure any man could reach.

She looked up at my entrance, her eyes alit with welcome. My pulse hummed a bit faster at the sight. Our night together was still vivid in my thoughts. While my ache for Alexander had taken hold of my body, I had found fulfillment clutched tight in her hot cunny.

“Good morning,” she said, her throaty voice sending chills along my skin.

Instinct begged me to kiss her pouty lips in greeting but that invisible wall shot up and I stepped back, clutching my hat in my hand like some whipped puppy.

“Good morning. I trust you had a pleasant outing with Joseph.” I hung my hat up and squared my shoulders, steeling myself to act normal.

“Most pleasant.” Her smile lessened and she tapped the pen against the ledger.

I waited for her to speak further. Like Laura, Joseph was her heart and soul. It had pained her to let him go to school. Even now, I could read the regret in her expression. “He had to leave home sometime. I too am facing a similar dilemma.”

Caro nodded, the curl resting on her shoulder dipping lower on her chest. The vision of her naked in the room shot into my mind’s eye. Her breasts were high and tipped pink, a temptation to any man. I found it ironic that I was attracted to both men and women, yet there I was. Pulling the chair out, I sat down across from her.

“Laura will be out soon.”

“Too soon.” I thumbed the wool of my trouser leg, uneasy at the prospect. Silence fell between us, the ticking of the clock the only sound. This would be the perfect opportunity to broach the subject of my leaving her employ, but the words stuck in my throat.

“Laura is a lovely girl. She will find a match. And since you will be a knight, her pool of prospective husbands will have opened up.” Caro settled the pen on the desk and closed the ledger she’d been working on. In addition to being a savvy business woman, she was one of the smartest people I had ever met.

“Would it be selfish to wish that she could stay with me forever?” I teased, wishing that I could do such a thing. Of course, it would not be fair to Laura.

Her earlier smile returned, brightening her entire face. “No, not at all. Had I it within my powers, Joseph would still be a baby in his nappies instead of a twelve-year-old.”

“Indeed.” A bark of laughter escaped me and the tension in my neck lessened. After another dinner with my father-in-law the previous night presented two more perspective clients, the pressure on me was building. If I were a brave man, I would tell her now but I dreaded the look of disappointment on her face.
